Answer #1 · Gardenality.com's Answer · Hi Donna,

Yes, King Sago Palm can be planted outdoors in South Atlanta, Ga. The King Sago Palm is half hardy in Zone 8, but will survive if planted in the right spot. The preferred location to plant one is on the South or East side of the house. Plant as close to the house as possible. This will protect it from the North winds during Winter months. The King Sago Palm will most likely suffer damage during colder Winters with extended periods of well below freezing temperatures. When damage occurs simply prune off all dead frawns. The Sago Palm will usually recover well. I know of King Sago specimans that are many years old and doing great. I'm from the South side of Atlanta as well.

Hope this helps you.

Answer #2 · Gardenality.com's Answer · I've seen the most damage to King Sago Palms when there is an early warm up in spring followed by a late deep freeze. This can happen not only in Georgia but all the way down to Tampa Florida. So, yes, it's hardy in Zone 8a. But, like with other plants, can suffer from a late spring freeze. Brooks is right...if there's cold damage to some of the fronds just prune them off and the plant will usually send up new growth when temperatures have warmed up.)
