Maple Tree's Answer · Hi Rob-Strappy leafed plants such as the Lomandra are best pruned in late winter or early spring after any freezing temperatures are expected. Normally with this plant is is best to do this every 2 to 4 years to keep them looking nice. You never want to prune the Lomandra back during drought conditions or in the middle of the summer or winter. With Lomandra you can cut the plants back to within 12 inches of the ground. Be sure to use very sharp tools to do this such as knives, hand shears or trimmers with blades and not cords. Other tools can make a mess as they may tear the leaves and not cut them straight and clean. I like to cut my grasses back in a ball shape which leaves them looking nice in the landscape during recovery. These plants normally recover well from this type of pruning but once in awhile one may die but I have never had this happen. If your plant has grown quite large you can help it recover from heavy pruning by cutting the plant back and leaving about 10% of the plant longer. In a few weeks after the rest of the plant has started to send up new shoots you can trim the last few leaves down also. After pruning feed your plants with a slow release fertilizer. This will help with recovery and keep the plants new growth healthy with a nice green coloring.
