Maple Tree's Answer · Hi Amber-I know how hard it is to rid many ground covers of Bermuda grass. Fortunately I have only had to contend with small patches of Bermuda grass in other types of ground covers. I have always been able to pull it up by hand or spot treat it with a non-selective weed killer. The best natural way would be to dig it up by hand removing as much of its roots as possible as it spreads by the underground roots. I haven't heard of any other natural way of killing this grass that has been useful to others. Keeping your ground cover healthy and thick will help to control it but won't entirely kill it once it has started coming in. If it is spreading into your ground cover from a lawn area you can dig around the perimeter of the ground cover and install a brick or bender board (wood or plastic) border at least several inches deep to help keep the Bermuda grass from spreading into the ground cover. If you have small areas of the Bermuda grass you can spot treat the grass with Round Up or Killzall Grass and Weed Killer. You can treat the grass by using a small paint brush to apply the herbicide directly to the foliage. When using these weed killers you don't want to get it on any other plants as they are non-selective herbicides that will kill any plant it comes in contact with. When choosing a herbicide you always want to read the label carefully making sure it not only controls or kills the Bermuda grass but can be used over the Red Apple succulent (Aptenia cordifolia) without harming it. I noted three products that have good reviews regarding the control and killing of Bermuda grass in the Red Apple ground cover. All three of these herbicides labels note they can be used over your particular ground cover. Always read the labels carefully making sure mixing and application of the product is done exactly as noted. Several application is usually needed and should be done at the recommended intervals.
