Topping Off Manila Palm

Tree is too tall. Will tree grow back if the top 10 feet or so is cut off?

Answer #1 · Maple Tree's Answer · Hi Clyde-No the Christmas Palm or Manila Palm (Adonidia merrillii) will not grow new fronds if the top is cut off. Only clustering palms that have multiple stems can be cut back to the ground. These palms will produce sucker shoots from the roots that will grow into new trunks. Cutting off the trunk of a solitary trunked palm such as the Manila Palm will kill it. These types of palms can not regenerate new growth as trees with bark and different underlying tissue can. If you cut the top off your palm the trunk and roots will eventually rot and the remainder of the palm will fall over.
