Answer #2 · Gardenality.com's Answer · Hi Donna - John listed some great alternatives to Leyland cypress. Here's a few others I can think of though your location/USDA Zone will determine whether or not they can be grown in your area.

Carolina Sapphire Cypress

Cryptomeria 'Radicans'

Southern Magnolia hybrids (not the native)

'Mary Nell' Holly

Here's a link to a good article about evergreen trees that are useful for privacy screens and buffers...

Hope this info was helpful and let us know if you have any other questions.

Answer #1 · Maple Tree's Answer · Hi Donna-Are you looking for other coniferous types of evergreen trees? There are a few types of trees that do have foliage that is more dense than the Leyland. Do you have a desired height and width for the tree you are looking for? The Leyland Cypress is one of the fastest growing trees and popular with many for privacy. I noted some other coniferous evergreen trees I can think of that are fast growing (may not be quite as fast as the Leyland) and are somewhat more dense in foliage. I noted links below to the plant files for these trees. Just click on the links to go directly to the plant files. These trees will grow in the same hardiness zones as the Leyland. If you are looking for a different type of tree or have a specific height and width let me know and I will try also to give you a list of more trees to look at. I'm thinking you are looking for a tree to give you some security and privacy. Depending on the height you desire possibly some larger shrubs may work for you. Are you looking for an evergreen or are deciduous trees and shrubs OK?

Juniper

Hopefully this has helped. If you are looking for another type of tree or need one for a different purpose than I'm assuming let me know.
