Maple Tree's Answer · Hi Kim-Most varieties are cold hardy to zone 4. Because asparagus can stay productive for a long period of time, it is important to plant the best variety for your location. Varieties that will emerge late will often work well in colder climates as they most often will escape damage from late spring freezing. The 'Guelph Millennium' variety from what I have read has proven to be hardy to zone 3 and is quite disease resistant. I noted a link below to an article on this variety. You might also check with your local nursery or garden center for their recommendation of a variety that has done well in your location. Some varieties such as 'Viking', 'Mary Washington', and the Jersey Series Asparagus have shown to over-winter well in zone 3 when protected with a good mulching during the winter months.
