I have some daffodil and narcissus bulbs to plant and was wondering if there is an optimal time to plant them. Should I wait until the temperatures drop or is it OK to plant them when it is still warm during the day (70's and 80's)? Thanks

Fall weather conditions in my home town here in middle Georgia have been a bit abnormal with temps. around the same as what you have mentioned as well. When it comes to planting bulbs, my general rule of thumb is to try to wait until the ground temperature is holding at a consistent 60 degrees. The ground temperature will hold enough warmth and give the bulbs the ability to go ahead and start to develop a root system, and the above ground temps. should be mild enough at that time, for no top growth to emerge from the bulb its self. That being said, i would recommend waiting just a short period of time to plant. Use your judgement as to when this time frame falls and at that time, I think it's safe. Answer #1 · Maple Tree's Answer · Hi Steve-6 to 8 weeks before the first expected hard frost is the best time to plant your daffodils and narcissus. This supposedly is when most soils are below 60 degrees F.. In warmer climates such as my location which is in the eighties now also all month I normally get my daffodils planted now or sometime before Thanksgiving. In northern climates they are usually planted in September and October and in the south, October and November.

I really like the way these bulbs pop up and brighten my gardens every year. I keep most of mine in the ground year round. They sure will draw attention and put smiles on all who attend church in the Spring.
