Will Crape Myrtle Bloom In Mostly Shaded Area?

Filed Under: Gardenality Help, Trees · Keywords: Will. Crape Myrtle, Bloom, In, Mostly Shade, How To, Prune, Crape Myrtle · 1917 Views
I moved into a new house last year. The crape myrtle in the back was pruned in the spring last year and I am wondering what I should do this year for it. It is in a very shady part of the yard that does not get a lot of sun. It did not have a lot of blooms and did not bloom for very long. Any advice would be appreciated.

Answer #1 · Gardenality.com's Answer · Hi Beverly,

Crape Myrtles prefer a mostly sunny location to bloom well. Afternoon or all day sun is preferred.

If the Crape Myrtle is not too large to move you may consider moving it to a sunny location while it's still dormant.

Generally it's best to prune Crape Myrtle in February or March if you live in the Southeast. Prior to the growing season.

Here's a link to a Gardenality page that will inform you of How To Prune A Crape Myrtle:
