Help! I have noticed that my herb garden has very small catepillers on the leaves. They are eating more than their weight on my plants. How can I get rid of them?

Answer #2 · Gardenality.com's Answer · Hi Joni,

There is a home made remedy that will repel caterpillars. It repels many other insects as well. Here's how to make it:

Put orange peels or any citrus peels in a blender or food processor. After processing the peels put them in a bowl and pour boiling water over them. Cover the mixture with plastic wrap and allow it to sit over night. Strain the mixture through cheese cloth. Pour the strained liquid into a hand held sprayer. Fill the remaining space in the sprayer with warm water. You are now ready to spray.

By using orange peels you will realize a very pleasant fragrance.

Answer #1 · Maple Tree's Answer · Hi Joni-Many caterpillars become adult beautiful butterflies or moths. Unfortunately when they have heavily infested our plants and have become too destructive they don't seem to be an insect we want to wait till their adult stage.

Bacillus thuringiensis (BT) can be used to get rid of caterpillars. It is safe to humans. It is a bacteria that infects and kills caterpillars. The great thing is it only kills caterpillars, which means there are no innocent bystanders that get wasted in the process. Since BT must be ingested to work, it is applied to foliage as a spray. BT is available at many nuseries and garden shops. Insecticidal Soaps also work well and are also available at your nurseries. There are also some very good home remedies you can use that are safe and easily made to rid your plants of these pestky little cridders.

I have noted below the link to a good article by Brent Wilson in Gardenality that will help you with 'Insect And Pest Control In The Herb Garden'. Just click on this link to go directly to the article.
