Answer #1 · Chason Arthur's Answer · If you are looking for the most hardy shade trees to grow in South Carolina, I'd suggest oaks, elms, maples, bald cypress, riverbirch, ash, sycamore, tulip poplar and zelkova are all good selections. If you want the trees to be evergreen(keep their foliage during winter), Southern Magnolia, Deodora Cedars, Red Cedar, Green Giant Arborvitae, Carolina Sapphire Cypress, and Cyptomeria radicans or 'Yoshino' are good selections.)
