Canna lily prefers growing in well-drained but consistently moist soil. Soils that stay too wet or soggy can cause problems. The best thing to do is amend you soil with compost and/or peat moss to keep the soil loose and to help retain moisture. Canna lilies spread so plant them 12 inches or more apart. They prefer full sun but will tolerate part shade. Keep canna lilies mulched well to help retain soil moisture.

Maximize the blooming of canna lily during the growing season by cutting the stalks as soon as you notice that blooming has slowed or stopped. Cut the stalks close to the ground. New shoots will then emerge that produce new blooms. At the end of the season, after the plant has gone dormant, you can cut the stalks down to the ground.

Dividing Canna Lily

Dig the cannas lily bulbs up gently with a pitch of garden fork. Brush the dirt off so you can see the eyes or buds on the rhizome. Cut off any old foliage. Using a sharp clean knife, cut the rhizome so that two or three healthy eyes remain. Then plant them with the rhizomes, eyes up, about two to four inches deep from zone 6 south and six inches deep north of Zone 6. Then water deeply. You can fertilize with empsom salt or a flower food with high phosphorus content.

A few insects will visit canna lily on occasion: aphids, leaf rollers and snails and slugs. To control aphids (small green insects) you can spray foliage of plant with neem oil. Snails and slugs can be controlled with a commercial bait or by setting out jar lids filled with beer. Leaf rollers can be controlled with Dipel Dust, a biological insecticide not harmful to other insects.
